Responsibilities include the Advanced Diagnostics Laboratory which provides chemo/molecular taxonomic and diagnostic services for a wide range of taxonomic problems from Africanized Honeybee identification to diagnostics of plant pathogens. Research at the ADL includes the molecular analysis of population structure and biogeographical variation in the fungal genus Colletotrichum.

Research interests include the chemosystematics and taxonomy of the Diptera with emphasis on the Glossinidae, Tabanidae, and Tephritidae. Specific research includes the subgeneric taxonomic structure of the genus Glossina (Diptera: Glossinidae), identity of and variation in the contact sex pheromones in Glossina, the Tabanus nigrovittatus-quinquevittatus and T. lineola species complexes in the Tabanidae, and the distribution of and hosts for the Tephritidae of Florida and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
